Starting Repairs

The day we signed the contract for the boat we started repairing it.

The first thing we did was interview a guy that did boat upholstery.  I had arranged for him to come down to see the boat and give us a price.

This is where I realized every one knew everyone in the Carolina Beach boat Community.  He arrived and Jay said, “Hi Curtis! How are you Doing”.  Then they exchanged information about someone named Steve that shot a bear and had  it mounted for his house.

Curtis then gave me a price estimate to redo all the seats and beds in the curtains and the repair was then started.

Next I tried to arrange for waxing.  Josh who I found as a boat detailer said, “Oh you bought Bud’s old boat, I can try to wax it but I doubt it will help, it needs painting.”

So then I tried to have the boat wrapped with Vinyl which was suppose to be cheaper than painting.  I contacted a guy and explained what I needed done and he said, “Oh you bought the boat Jay was selling.  I think that finish is too far gone for a wrap to stick, I will give some you some test patches to try on it.”  We tried that and found the adhesion was poor due surface oxidation.  So a wrap was out.

Finally went to Carolina Beach Boat Yard described the boat to Brandy the office manager, and she said, “OH that is Bud’s boat, it will need bottom painting as well we will give you a price for the job in the few days”.

The few days that turned in 12 days and turned out to a lot more that I had hoped for but very close to Brandy’s first guess.   Therefore we agreed.

Brandy said the boat would come out December 1st and be complete January 15th.  I wish that was true.  Turned out the boat came out December 15 and was not officially complete until February 19th plus a few days.  Talking to other people with boats in the area I can tell we were lucky one guy said it took more than 2 years to complete a similar job.

On February 1 Brandy called and informed me I needed a new radio, and refrigerator and was waiting on a belt tensioner.  Then on the 10th she called to tell me they could not find a tensioner and askrf me to search for a part here in Indiana.  To my surprise I found one in about 30 minutes of starting by just changing the Jeep model with a similar diesel engine.  It was also 3 times cheaper.  Brandy was mad when I informed her of my success.  Turned out she had spend a better part of 2 days looking for it.  Now the launch day was set for Monday the 14.

I had purchased all the refinishing stuff for the inside of the boat so on Feb. 12 we set out to refinish the inside and see the new paint job.
