April 21
CoinJock Marina to Top Rack Marina Town of Chesapeake
A very long day.
For some reason not at all relaxed when we started so there was lot of problems with finding a place to dock tonight and then charting the course. I think we were very close to the last boat to leave the dock and there were about 30 boats there.
Once underway it was water was calm and I had a couple cups of coffee. The run took us up down the North River (I know of at least three North Rivers) and we crossed into Virginia. That means we have crossed out of our first state a great accomplishment given my skill level.
During the day we had 2 swing bridges (these pivot on a center to open a channel under) and had to wait on them and one lift bridge (spilts in the middle and both halves hinge up. Then came a surprise a lock. This is the first lock in this boat ever for me. I did not see it on the chart. There were no problems though and Di did her bit at the stern and worked the wheel and the side rope through the window.
The marina we are in have plenty of berths but would not take reservations not sure why. The rate is good only $1.70 per foot. Diesel is really expensive now $4.60 a gallon so a fill up over $350. I keep topping the tank to make it easy on the one time hits.
I am still chuckling about the boats last night.
Here are couple of the comments:
This boat looks bigger than it is it is only 41 feet long.
Your little boat is cute.
You should get your grounding experience here as it is soft and won’t do any damage. Get into Canada and it is all granite.
My wife was really mad about the crossing it was rough and we have stabilizers. Though the captain thought it was not too bad. Captain and husband are one and the same.
Seen today:
- 33 seagulls (only 3 sitting on buoys)
- 2 bald eagles (both sitting on nests on Green channel Markers)
- 18 black water birds sitting on the channel Markets. All in the morning in the afternoon after warmed up I think they started to fish.
- 4 sail boats all sails down
- 6 power boats (only one passed us it was like having a wall next to us)
- 1 barge coming south
👍
