Deltaville to Tangier Island 30 miles
We did it and successfully anchored all night. I wish I could say without interruptions but only minor drifting. I set an anchor alarm on my cell phone app as it has GPS and allowed 80 feet of drift at 5 am the alarm went off for the first time. I checked and I was still fine so set a second alarming allowing 30 feet more and it when off at 6:30 so we got up. Everything was fine but once up we decided to stay up. So we cooked pancakes and had two cups of coffee before leaving.
It was tough pulling up the anchor even with the winch. I had to climb up front carefully provide some muscle power to the rope. Something you have to be careful doing as the winch can bite if you are not very careful. We were underway at 8:15 which is pretty good for us.
It was long ride across the bay but we were lucky the traffic was light only saw one big container ship and he cleared our stern by more than 2 miles. While leaving the harbor got focused on the GPS system and missed a 40 yacht approaching from my left. When I did see him I stopped the boat to provide him enough space to pass in front of me. Just goes to show you the Walt was right pay attention. The rest of the crossing was uneventful as except for dodging crab pots.
Tangier Island was found in 1608 by Smith the first white guy to map the Chesapeake and water sources. Then in 1620 a patent was issued for it and people started to move onto it. The biggest news was in 1814 when the British invaded and tried to take Baltimore. They occupied the island freed and trained slaves to fight with them. They also build a fort on the island for a couple of months. It currently has has clearly aging population of 400 people and earn most of its income from tourists and fishing. In the 1990 during a hurricane the southern entrance to the town was silted in so no all the traffic is from south east and south west. Mr Park told me not to use the east entrance. Tangiers seems to have a busy little private airport seen a couple of helicopters land and leave and several small planes. Had lunch at Loretta’s of steam shrimp with a side of fried sweet potatoes. It was great.
