Brewton NY to Oswego NY 28 miles 8 locks
We dug down deep and called Canadian immigration, boarder service and COVID reporting on ArrivecCan app. Finally after 3 hours we did complete the app and submitted it for review. Set the date to cross in Canada as May 29 tomorrow. So we had to get here to be in position to make the attempt. Weather still looks good so we will start early and go like tortoise slow and steady.
It rained steady all morning during the first 5 locks. About lock 6 we could see a little blue and by the time we arrived here it was all blue skies. the route followed down to the Oswego river where it split off to the Erie canal or to Lake Ontario. The Canal looked pretty nice but we stayed the course.
Once we arrived I filled with diesel. Just for cost reasons only needed our tank was pretty full and is showing full. In the 8 locks had no problems in docking for fuel no problems. However entering the slip I panicked and over rotated the boat. The guy in the slip next to mine hopped out and grabbed my bow that made it easy to get in so it was all good. More practice I thought after 8 successful locks I had it down but that does happen.
After that we checked the oil in the transmission and it was really reduced. Then walked over to Fort Ontario. There has been a fort here for centuries. Indian fort first to help the Iroquois name maintain and defend their trading routes. Then theFench build here. The English kicked then out a second time. They went from here to Niagara fall and took the French trading post there this would have been 1765. Then the American came and took it in 1796. The British and Americans traded the fort a couple of times in 1811-1814. Then the civil war in the US happened and the place became training post. Finally in WW1 Fort Ontario became a hospital for soldiers. Finally closing down in 1972 although still home some artillery forces.
Well that is the history of the area and the day.
