May 9

Got up early hoping to beat the wind and it did not work at all.  Inside them marina calm quite in the harbor windy as get out.  In addition the current was against plus the wind plus a ton of speedy little NY ferries.  These guys have no mercy on the slow boats like mine.  The zip right by and leave huge wake.  Rocked the boat so bad it put my second cup of coffee into the sink.  I was pleased with this as thought it was on the flow but that cup was Dianne’s empty cup.

I was running the boat harder than normal a lot harder 2300 RPMs where as I normally run 1750.  On most days we get 4.8-6 miles per gallon and travel anywhere from 5-6.5 Knots per hour.  Today we make only 3 miles per gallon and traveled at less than 4 knots in New York Harbor and about 4.3-4.7 north of the Harbor.

The wind was blowing directly in our face in the ocean there were still Gale warning however the river did not even have a small Craft advisory.  That stated I ran the wipers more than ever.

However we did pass three tows pushing Petrol upriver so we are not the slowest thing today.

Seen today

  • 2 huge bridges across the river several smaller ones beside us.
  • the bluffs of Hudson River
  • 1 boat out fishing
  • 2 other cruised but why up river at Haverstraw.  I do not think any other boats wanted to leave today
  • three tows
  • 8 ferries rushing around
  • 3 large sticks that required me to maneuver around to avoid
  • 1 tree in the water
  • 1 seagull that dropped a fish he was carrying
  • infinite White caps

Heard on the Radio

Attention all boaters in the area of the Brooklyn Bridge a report of a body in the water Please avoid the area and report all sightings.

About 30 minutes the area around the bridge is open to navigation again the body was recovered.

At the stop we had to ride our bikes into town as the boat has no food left in it.  We are taking a week off at home to repack gear and get ready for the Canadian part of the trip.  I plan to let the blog rest a few days and just update the changes maybe once or twice in the coming days.

Thanks to all

Allan and Dianne.
