June 30, July 1 and July 2
June 30 Byng Inlet to Bustard Island 20 miles (outside channel a little sporty)
Yes we did going in strong wind advisory but it seemed like a good run. Had a little trouble spotting the rocks. By following the GPS we did avoid all groundings so it was good run.
Bustard Islands are a small group of Islands off the coast a little ways with good anchorages. We decided we wanted to try to anchor and see how it went. We we arrived the area had 5 boats in the anchorage and we decided to give it a shot. (Really did not want to go any further as it was becoming a little too rough even for me).
Once in the area there was limited space we thinking about where to drop the “hook” in boating terms. A guy by the name of Randy from Heart Tug jumped in his dink and helped out. We learned how to drop an anchor take a rope to shore and tie off. Then slowly let rope out on the anchor and pull back into shore. I was pretty nervous going to sleep last night but nothing moved all night. So my anchor alarm did not go off even a foot.
Inflated the little boat yesterday and took it out for a row. I seemed to work well. Went over to visit with Randy and then hiked across the island to see the wind.
Finished the day off with chicken pasta and beer plus a few cookies.
July 1st Canada Day
Foggy and windy this morning so we decided to stay put. Dianne is eager to move as she wants to get home for some reasons I do not understand. However we have been moving for a while now so it is good idea I guess.
Not a lot to do on the boats so we played cards today, did a little computer games and did some reading. Randy visited over on his dingy and asked to join them for lunch on a shore around the corner on some rocks I believe Wayne and Barb are coming and someone called Clive and his wife Betty? from a Monk Trawler. Wish I was better at names. Note that cell service here sucks so I guess we can try to post this if we move tomorrow.
July 2
Bustard Island to Killarney Mountain Lodge. 33 miles
Last night was busy in the anchorage. The wind picked up out of the west and Just Do It was turning a bit. I asked Heart Tug if they though my anchor was slipping? Randy’s answer was no but if I wanted to add an extra Rope he would help. As Randy is good and competent I said no given his opinion. Just before 8:30 Randy’s stern rope snapped in the winds. Lots of cursing! I even heard him say maybe I should not of trusted him. Nonsense accidents like that happen. They tied 90 degrees to their original position directly in front of us.
Another Ranger Tug tied up in the anchorage late in the day. With Randy moving around they decided to move before that happened to them. Me I stayed put and we had no problems.
Before all this happened I deflated the dingy and stowed it so I was little help.
Dianne has counted out her meds yesterday and really needs to get home ASAP so we had charted a plan to get home in 6 days. This involves some double trips and cutting some corners plus required leaving for sure today.
There were Strong Wind WARNING for today but the wave forecast looked OK. This morning I did not want to but Dianne really has the need to move on so left early. Randy and Audrey helped with the anchor after I winched the boat up a bit with the anchor. We then waved goodbye and off we went. When in the lee of the islands things were calm. When in the bay it was bouncing a good deal. After noon the wind picked up to 20 knots and it became really bad but the boat did even drift off course. So we made it here.
During the trip:
- Rope on one of the bumpers broke off. Took us about 15 minutes to get it back. We lucky as just when I decided to go pee I saw it floating behind us and we in a small break in the wind and not near any rocks.
- Heard on the radio, 3 late returning paddle boarders. One paddle board was found without the 20 year male around it,
- Heard on the Radio, 1 Mayday too far away for us to help but I did feel good go hear 3 boats trying to get there.
- Heard on the radio person in the water request for help. This one we heard that the person was found, and retrieved by coast guard.
- Saw 2 seagulls and no other people after we left Bustards till we reached Killareny
