Sept 5
Grand Harbor to Midway Marina on Tenn-Tom 55 miles 3 locks
These big mileage days are killing me another 8 hours running and that does not include the time I killed the engines in the locks and waiting for locks. A long day! When I finish I have to cook dinner too, but fortunately that also means it is beer time, so can not in good faith ask for a “Poor Allan”.
This was the first day for down stream on the canal system. I noticed it when we entered the channel to the marina last night the mid channel marker changed the buoy sides. So the indications on the map showed the normal level of the river was 414 ft above sea level. After three locks the elevation for only 250 ft. Those are some big locks. We were very lucky the locks were on a schedule today but the lock masters let us lock through early and then notified the next lock we were coming and they were ready for us. We never would have made the distance today if they did not do that.
Many fewer boats today only about 40 and there were 5 tows. The tows here are much less friendly than on the Mississippi or Ohio. There they would answer you when you requested information on a pass here out of the 5 only 2 acknowledged we existed. Thank heaven the lock masters were nice people.
We did not make a reservation for a berth tonight as we did not know how far along we would be given the open spaces in the past couple of day I assumed it would not be a problem and it was not.
Pictures to follow internet does is not fast enough at this little marina or maybe I have had too much post driving relaxation.
Allan
